     Another common reason why people love to play the ukulele is that it only has 4 strings.  The excitement of the guitar is quickly lost by many beginners simply because it takes so long to become proficient.  Boasting 6 strings the guitar often takes several months to a year before a person feels comfortable with the instrument.  The ukulele, however, is so simple to learn (many chords requiring only 1 finger to play) that many people find themselves performing their first song within hours of receiving their first ukulele in the mail.  4 strings vs. 6 strings . . . you do the math!
